Emergency Contraception & STI Prevention
Emergency Contraception
The St. Croix Valley Sexual Assault Response team (SART), complies with the State of Wisconsin, Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Act.
The Act states that all hospitals providing emergency care to victims of sexual assault “must provide medically and factually accurate and unbiased written and oral information regarding emergency contraception” and must immediately provide Emergency Contraception to the victim upon her request.
Our Forensic Nurses provide emergency contraception at all 7 of our Care Partner Hospitals and at the SART Center. A pregnancy screening test is required prior to administering emergency contraception. Plan B(http://planbonestep.com/what-is-plan-b.aspx), an oral synthetic hormone, is the most common type of emergency contraception used and is often referred to as the “morning after pill.”
STI Prevention
Our Forensic Nurse will perform a thorough examination and will provide you with emergency medication to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STI’s).
We recommend medical follow-up care and complete testing by your physician following a sexual assault. Our Client Services Coordinator, Erin, will assist you with follow-up procedures and answer any questions you may have.
